The U.S. military’s newest fighter aircraft, seen above, are here in Oregon!
The Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Wing has transitioned to the Air Force’s all new, highly advanced F-15EX Eagle II. You can see these jets flying proudly over our state’s northern skies for the first time on Memorial Day 2026! Take an inside look at the Director of the Air National Guard flying this plane May 21st 2026, and why he calls it “amazing.” Meanwhile, Oregon Air National Guard’s 173rd Fighter Wing, based in Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls, is taking a pause from flying (see below) while it transitions to fifth generation F-35A Lightning II jets which will not be online there until 2027.

Pictured above is the Oregon Air Nat’l Guard aircraft we have been use to see flying on major American holidays: either the F-15C (one-seat) or the F-15D (two seat, training) Eagle fighter jet. These air-to-air combat planes are distinguished from the multi-role F-15E Strike Eagles later developed and used in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which are a darker gray camouflaged color.

SOUTHWEST OREGON 3
Unfortunately, there will be no Memorial Day flights over our Southwest Oregon communities in 2026. The reason is that the 173rd Fighter Wing based in Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls that makes those flights is transitioning aircraft. It’s going from a formal training unit for the F-15C and F-15D Eagles that have flown for decades to a training unit for the F-35A Lightning II. The 173rd retired its last F-15 Eagles in December 2025. It won’t get the new F-35s until 2027. Meanwhile significant infrastructure upgrades are underway at the base. This is a major conversion involving the most sophisticated fighter jet ever designed. The 173rd Fighter Wing has had no choice but to pause all flyover requests until late 2027.

How come they don’t fly over the Vietnam Memorial for the Memorial Day Ceremony????
2 jets flew over Portland Rd and I5 area about 10:50 headed S.W.
Sighting in Eugene around 11:18. Planes flying toward Springfield. Original schedule says Springfield 11:25 & then Eugene 11:26. Planes were very quiet. If you weren’t looking up, there was a good chance you would miss the flyover.
What happened nothing !! Stop and tell me what went wrong!!!
I’ve been outside in Vancouver since well before the stated time. I see and hear no jets. I even saw airspace cleared several times? Disappointed!
Keizer Ore …. Still waiting??
Sad the boatnik this year sucks without the flyover for the service men and women that fought to keep us safe lord bless them for the racers keep them safe hopefully the flyover next year will more exciting at one o’clock I will be looking at the sky and see nothing but I will saying a prayer for the fallen ones GOD BLESS THEM
Forgive me for the -1. It was unintentional. God Bless our republic.
Be well sir
It would be awesome to see a flight map. That way maybe some of the towns without specific flyover points will see an opportunity too with just being on the flight path.
That’s a great idea, Justin! I will find a way to add this next year. Thank you! Kind regards, Matc
Hi there, Is there just one plane flying over Oregon and Washington? If that’s the case… are you saying that the plane can be in Forest Grove and in 3 minutes will be in Beaverton? …I didn’t realize how fast the planes flew. Is there a way for the cemetery near Forest Grove to be added?
Please send me contact information.
May you all have a blessed Memorial Day.
May God bless all the Military, Veterans and their families always ! Amen,Amen, Amen!!!
Why not Bend and Redmond???
What about Roseburg?
Dang none in bend?
None in Grants Pass Dang my residents in a facility look forward to it every year
I know it is a vast area over here but it would be nice to have a few locations in the eastern part of the state.
That’s a great point, Jeanneine. I will reach out to folks organizing in the eastern communities and find out more about their efforts to get flyovers. There are certainly plenty of influential veterans in all areas of the state, and other people who could make this happen. Kind regards, Marc
Well I am in Keizer and we usually always see the planes after they fly over Salem. Nothing! Really disappointing. Well Happy Memorial Day everyone and bless our troops everywhere. We are so lucky and blessed to have them.
I’m anxiously awaiting in Springfield. They are delayed it seems
Thanks for the post. I am at the large ceremony in Mt. Angel. Flyover just occurred at 11:01 two minutes early!
We have seen nor heard a thing since the appointed time of 9:30
I don’t know exactly where they flew over at 9:30, but they missed the Springfield Veterans Memorial by miles. I think people said they saw them in West Eugene?
Wow. Surprising. I know they integrate training into these flight exercises but…? I’m sorry you folks did not get to see them. Thank you for taking the time to update the post here. Very best regards, Marc
Looks like the Willamette Valley and Western Oregon. Get it all… Nothing east of the Cascades.
🙁
Ashland??
It’s 9:41 and nothing in Springfield 🙁
I see it was delayed, but I hope you did see it? I wish the weather was a bit better for the flyovers. It’s a long and involved process for the ceremony organizers to apply to the state’s Air National Guard to get a flyover. It looks like most of the 26 applications around the state this year were approved which is great. Kind regards, Marc
I think Sheila was referring to the schedule says Springfield at 9:30 and hasn’t seen or heard them as of 9:41.
Thanks for put this schedule together Marc
Yes 🙁
Saw the southern route flyover in Roseburg, altho there was some cloud cover and made it difficult to see them. Was hoping they’d fly Under the clouds cover 😉
There will be some of us out on 101 with our flags to welcome our warriors!
We are proud of you!
Never forget!
Thanks so much to you all for doing that! I hope you have a meaningful day. Best, Marc
Why not go into Cowlitz county???
So, no Sunny Valley this year?
Hah! 🙂 No, unfortunately not.
How very disappointing. We go to watch every year. There are Vets that live here. Going into Grants Pass, OR with Boatnik going on, not a good idea. Thousands of people come here for the boat races on the Rogue River.
I love the fly over. I’ve seen it every year.
Me too, Anne. It’s such a meaningful aspect of the ceremonies. We are fortunate to have the Air Nat’l Guard find a way to make their flight path honor so many of the flyover requests that are submitted. 24 this yer! Take good care. Best regards, Marc.
Is there a link to flight path? We live off the McKenzie river and were wondering if the F-15’s will be coming down the river on approach to Springfield at 9:30 (or vice versa)? Do you take requests haha?
Those [jets in original pic, now removed] are F-15E’s and they weren’t even around when Vietnam War was on. The jets in that pic are also from Seymour-Johnson N.C
Thanks Mike. I sincerely appreciate you spotting that. I have swapped out the pic and updated the caption to now, hopefully clarify that the F-15C and F-15D Eagles which Oregon’s 142nd and 173rd fly on Memorial Day are indeed, as you point out, not Vietnam-era (although they were being designed and tested while that war was ongoing, they entered production in 1978), and to distinguish them from variants such as the F-15E Strike Eagles and the brand new F-15EX fighters the 142nd has been recently receiving. I wonder if we will ever see the F-15EX flying on Memorial Day in the future. Thoughts? Thanks again! Best, Marc
