The main event on Memorial Day in Newberg is at Memorial Park. Community members gather there for a formal ceremony organized by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 47. The event in 2026 features a speech from retired Brig. Gen. Steven Beach, assistant adjutant general for the Oregon Army National Guard and a graduate of West Point. There will also be patriotic readings and songs, including appearances by the local American Heritage Girls group. The event’s annual highlight is something remarkable and highly to the point of Memorial Day’s Civil War origins: a recitation from memory of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by retired Sgt. Tim Weaver of the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. A barbecue follows at the park.
