Crescent Grove A Vital Part of Tigard History & Memorial Day

Most of the many people who every day drive right by the stately fir trees guarding the cemetery nestled in a commercial area off Highway 217 and behind Washington Square have no idea that it is over 170 years old. Within Crescent Grove Cemetery’s 21 acres are early and influential homesteading settlers of the area, including members of the Tigard, Fanno, Allen, Barnes, Davies, and Hall families. For generations the cemetery’s caretakers have lovingly tended this place. It is unique in being run completely as a non-profit.

Among the pioneer graves in Crescent Grove is that of Augustus Fanno (below left). Fanno was one of the first European American settlers in what became Washington County. After coming to Oregon in 1846 with his wife and son, he settled 640 acres under the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850. There he designed and built a historic farmhouse along what is now known as Fanno Creek. The Fanno family went on to pioneer the cultivation of onions in Oregon. Charles F. Tigard (below right), the son of pioneer Wilson Tigard, put the city of Tigard on the map in 1880 when he built a general store and meeting hall there.

John Wesley Graves was the youngest of three brothers who enlisted when the Civil War broke out. Graves served with Company A of the 107th New York Volunteers Infantry. Wounded in the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, he tried to re-enlist. Other veterans of the Civil War, from both the Union and Confederate sides, are also among those buried in Crescent Grove Cemetery . They rest in peace together on the cemetery’s central knoll.
